Wednesday Wonder No 7....

This lovely, if unloved book, was published in 1806, added to Birmingham Libraries collection in 1901, taken out once in 1942 and eventually discarded by the library, salvaged by us, sent all the way across the sea to Calgary, Canada, re-made by artist Linda Carreiro and sent back across the Atlantic to Birmingham and will be exhibited by The Library of Lost Books in the new Birmingham Library in November this year.

The book before....

the book transformed.....

Linda fell in love with the old book, so apart from the boat cut-out on the cover, the actual book is still intact and untouched. Instead, she digitally printed pages from the book onto rice paper, which she then made into the little paper boats. The maple-wood case was bought by Linda from a second-hand shop, rubbed down and repaired and fitted with the perspex shelf from which some of the little boats hang.

P.S You can see this transformed book for yourself when The Library of Lost Books comes to the Library of Birmingham from 5th to 24th November
